(from 1953 to 1962, Levskigrad), a city in southernBulgaria, in the Karlovo Basin between the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) and the Sredna Gora Range in Plovdiv District.Population, 23, 000 (1970). It is the center of a region of cultiva-tion and processing of essential-oil crops (production of rosesand lavender oils and mint). Other industry includes machine-building (Bulgar light caterpillar tractors), the production ofcotton and silk cloth, and food processing. A balneologicalhealth resort is located in Karlovo, and tourism is well devel-oped. Karlovo is the birthplace of the Bulgarian revolutionaryV. Levski.
