Ivan V Alekseevich

Ivan V Alekseevich

Born Aug. 27 (Sept. 6), 1666, in Moscow; died there Jan. 29 (Feb. 8), 1696. Russian tsar. Son of Aleksei Mikhailovich by his marriage with M.I. Miloslavskaia.

After the death of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich (Apr. 27, 1682), the Naryshkins proclaimed as tsar the younger tsarevich, Peter, passing over the older brother Ivan, who was sickly and incapable of conducting affairs of state. During the uprising of the strel’tsy (semiprofessional musketeers), Ivan V was enthroned and on May 26, 1682, confirmed by the Zemskii Sobor (National Assembly) as the “first” tsar. (His younger brother Peter I was considered the “second” tsar.) Ivan V reigned nominally; Tsarevna Sofia Alekseevna actually ruled until 1689, and Peter I ruled after that.
