Ivan Sulima

Sulima, Ivan Mikhailovich

Died Dec. 12 (22), 1635. Hetmán of unregistered Zaporozh’e cossacks.

Sulima was descended from minor Ukrainian members of the Polish gentry. After escaping from the oppression of Polish magnates, he joined the Zaporozh’e Host. He fought in campaigns against the Crimean Tatars and the Turks. He was first mentioned as a hetmán in 1628. In 1635, Sulima headed an insurrection of Zaporozh’e cossacks and, leading a large detachment, stormed and destroyed the fortress of Kodak and annihilated the Polish garrison. He was treacherously seized by cossack leaders and turned over to Polish authorities, who executed him in Warsaw.
