AIDS CDC Surveillance Case Definition

A general term for what the CDC defines as AIDS, which was revised in 2008 (the below table may still be used in some centres).
Adults and adolescents over age 13
• Laboratory-confirmed evidence of HIV infection
• CD4+ T-lymphocyte count of <200 cells/µL
• CD4+ T-lymphocyte percentage of total lymphocytes of <14%, or
• Diagnosis of an AIDS-defining condition
Children age 18 months to age 13
• Laboratory-confirmed evidence of HIV infection
• Diagnosis of an AIDS-defining condition
Children under 18 months
• Diagnosis of an AIDS-defining condition
• Mother has laboratory confirmed HIV infection

AIDS

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome A condition defined by CDC criteria, which is intimately linked to infection by a retrovirus, human immunodeficiency virus–HIV-1; long-term survival after HIV infection is possible; once clinical AIDS develops, it is fatal, despite temporary response to various therapies. AIDS diagnosed definitively w/o need to confirm HIV infection
Candidiasis of esophagus, trachea, bronchi, lungs Cryptococcosis, extrapulmonary Cryptosporidiosis > 1 month duration CMV infection of any organ EXCEPT liver, spleen, or lymph nodes in Pts > 1 month of age Herpes simplex infection, mucocutaneous > 1 month duration and/or of esophagus, bronchi, lungs Kaposi sarcoma < age 60 Primary CNS lymphoma < age 60 Lymphoid interstital pneumonitis and/or pulmonary lymphoid hyperplasia < age 13 Mycobacterium avium complex or M kansasiidisseminated Pneumocystis cariniipneumonia Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy Toxoplasmosis of the brain in Pts > 1 month of age
