Ivanovskii, Aleksei Arsen’evich

 

Born Feb. 23 (Mar. 7), 1866, in the village of Muiuta, Biisk District, now in Altai Krai; died May 4, 1934, in Kharkov. Soviet anthropologist.

Ivanovskii graduated from Moscow University in 1893. That same year he became curator of the Museum of Anthropology of Moscow University. From 1900 to 1914 he was editor of the Russkii antropologicheskii zhurnal. From 1903 he was a privat-docent at Moscow University and from 1914, a professor at the University of Kharkov.

Between 1889 and 1896, Ivanovskii participated in a number of scientific expeditions in the southern Altai region, Sinkiang Uighur, Mongolia, the Caucasus, and Turkey. His best known and most general works are On the Anthropological Composition of the Russian Population (1904) and The Population of the World: An Attempt at an Anthropological Classification (1911–12).
