Kell blood group system[′kel ′bləd ‚grüp ‚sis·təm] (immunology) A family of antigens found in erythrocytes and designated K, k, Kpa, Kpb, and Ku; antibodies to the K antigen, which occurs in about 10% of the population of England, have been associated with hemolytic transfusion reactions and with hemolytic disease. Kell blood group system A family of red blood cell ANTIGENS designated as the ALLOTYPES KK, Kk, kk and K-k-, believed to be on the short arm of chromosome 2. Antibodies to the K-antigen occur in about 10% of people in England and can cause red cell breakdown (haemolytic) transfusion reactions. The group system is next in importance to the ABO and rhesus systems and is named after a woman whose serum contained the antibodies. |
