(kā′ko͞o-lā′ fôn shträ′dō-nĭts), Friedrich August 1829-1896. German chemist who was a founder of organic chemistry. His discovery of the structure of benzene, a basic unit of organic chemistry, was fundamental to understanding many other organic compounds. See Note at benzene.
