Established: Chalmette Unit established as Chalmette Monument and Grounds on March 4, 1907; established as Chalmette National Historical Park on August 10, 1939. Redesignated and incorporated with other units on November 10, 1978. New park authorized on November 10, 1978.
Location:Park consists of six physically separate sites in southwestern Louisiana and a headquarters in New Orleans.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), bicycle trail, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Hiking, bicycling, boating, fishing, hunting, cultural programs and living history demonstrations, walking tours.
Special Features:Park preserves and interprets the cultural diversity of Louisiana's Mississippi Delta Region. The sites in Lafayette, Thibodaux, and Eunice interpret the Acadian cultures of the area; the Barataria Preserve in Marrero interprets the natural and cultural history of the uplands, swamps, and marshlands of the region; the Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery is the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans and the final resting place for soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and Vietnam War; and the historic French Quarter interprets the history of New Orleans and the diverse cultures of Louisiana's Mississippi Delta Region.
