i·so·an·ti·gen I0250200 (ī′sō-ăn′tĭ-jən)n. A protein or other substance, such as histocompatibility or red blood cell antigens, that is present in only some members of a species and therefore able to stimulate isoantibody production in other members of the same species who lack it. Also called alloantigen. i′so·an′ti·gen′ic (-jĕn′ĭk) adj.i′so·an′ti·ge·nic′i·ty (-jə-nĭs′ĭ-tē) n.isoantigen (ˌaɪsəʊˈæntɪdʒən) n (Physiology) immunol an antigen that stimulates antibody production in different members of the same speciesi•so•an•ti•gen (ˌaɪ soʊˈæn tɪ dʒən, -ˌdʒɛn) n. Isoantigen An immunologically active protein or polysaccharide present in some but not all individuals in a particular species. These substances initiate the formation of antibodies when introduced into other individuals of the species that genetically lack the isoantigen. Like all antigens, they are also active in stimulating antibody production in heterologous species. The ABO, MN, and Rh blood factors in humans constitute important examples. Consequently, elaborate precautions for typing are required in blood transfusion. See Antibody, Antigen, Blood groups isoantigen[¦ī·sō′ant·ə·jən] (immunology) An antigen in an individual capable of stimulating production of a specific antibody in another member of the same species. Also known as alloantigen. isoantigenenUK
isoantigen [i″so-an´tĭ-jen] an antigen existing in alternative (allelic) forms in a species, thus inducing an immune response when one form is transferred to members of the species who lack it; typical isoantigens are the blood group antigens.i·so·an·ti·gen (ī'sō-an'ti-jen), 1. An antigenic substance that occurs only in some individuals of a species, such as the blood group antigens of humans. For specific isoantigens of blood groups, see the Blood Groups Appendix. 2. Sometimes used as a synonym of alloantigen. isoantigen (ī′sō-ăn′tĭ-jən)n.
