Ivan Dmitrievich Kovalchenko

Koval’chenko, Ivan Dmitrievich

 

Born Nov. 26, 1923, in the village of Noven’koe, present-day Starodub Raion, Briansk Oblast. Soviet historian; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of USSR (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

Koval’chenko graduated from the department of history at Moscow State University in 1952. In 1955 he began teaching at Moscow State University. (In 1966 he became head of the department of the study of historical sources of the USSR, and in 1967 he became a professor.) Since 1969, Koval’chenko has served as editor in chief of the journal Istoriia SSSR. His basic works are in agrarian history and the history of the economic development of Russia in the 19th and early 20th century and historiography and the study of historical sources. He has served since 1966 as the chairman of the Commission on the Application of Mathematical Methods and Computers in Historical Research under History Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
