Ivan Beloded

Beloded, Ivan Konstantinovich

 

Born Aug. 16 (29), 1906, in the village of Uspenskoe, in what is now Onufrievka Raion, Kirovograd Oblast. Soviet linguist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972) and of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1957). Member of the CPSU since 1943.

After graduating from the University of Kharkov in 1932, Beloded taught at various higher educational institutions in Kharkov and L’vov. He was on the staff of the A. A. Potebnia Institute of Linguistics from 1946 to 1957 and became director of the institute in 1961. From 1957 to 1962, Beloded was minister of education of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1963 he was elected vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He was a candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Ukraine in 1960 and 1961. He is a member of the International and Soviet committees of Slavists and is chairman of the Ukrainian Committee of Slavists.

Beloded’s principal works deal with the development of literary languages in a multinational socialist society, linguistic contact, bilingualism, and the history and theory of the Russian and Ukrainian languages. Other areas to which he has contributed include lexicology and lexicography, the methodology and history of linguistics, translation theory, primary and secondary school education, and sociolinguistics. He is the editor of Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language (vols. 1–11, 1970–80).

Beloded received the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in 1971. He was a deputy to the fifth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. Beloded has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
