Karliev, Alty

Born Jan. 6, 1909, in Babadaikhan 2, in present-day Tedzhen Raion, Turkmen SSR. Soviet Turkmen actor and director. People’s Artist of the USSR (1955). Member of the CPSU since 1948.

Karliev graduated from the Turkmen Drama Studio (Ashkhabad) in 1929 and from the directors’ department of the Baku Theatrical Technicum in 1931. He worked as an actor from 1931 to 1941 and was the principal stage director of the Turkmen Drama Theater in Ashkhabad from 1953 to 1956. Among his best roles have been Iarovoi in Trenev’s Liubov’Iarovaia, Khles-takov in Gogol’s The Inspector-General, and Truffaldino in Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters. He has also directed plays, such as Kaushutov’s Dzhuma (1954) and The Inspector-General (1955). From 1941 to 1953 he was the principal stage director, and from 1960 to 1963 director and principal stage director, of the Makhtumkuli Turkmen Theater of Opera and Ballet in Ashkhabad. He has staged such operas as Shaposhnikov and Mu-khatov’s Zokhre and Takhir (1941) and Shaposhnikov and Ovezov’s Shasenem and Garib (1955). He has been in films since 1937; his roles include Nuri in Dursun (State Prize of the USSR, 1941), Kerim in The Distant Bride (1948; State Prize of the USSR, 1949), Aaly in Saltanat (1955), and Bairam in A Family’s Honor (1956). Karliev has worked as a film director and served as director of the Turkmenfilm movie studio from 1956 to 1960. He is the author of several plays and opera librettos. He was a deputy to the third and fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR. He received the Makhtumkuli State Prize of the Turkmen SSR in 1966. Karliev has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and medals.
