Iuzhnyi Altai

 

a mountain range in the southern Altai. It is about 125 km and has elevations to 3,871 m. There are steppe landscapes in the foothills to elevations of 1,400–1,500 m, and parklike deciduous forests to elevations of 2,100–2,200 m. In the high-mountain zone, subalpine and alpine meadows predominate. The range has glaciers, including the Alakhinskii, which measures 5 km in length and covers an area of 19.5 sq km.
