Kanna, Ion

 

(also Ivan Ivanovich Kanna). Born Jan. 15 (28), 1902, in the village of Goiany, present-day Dubossary Raion. Soviet Moldavian writer; member of the CPSU since 1941.

Kanna’s first works were published in 1926–27. Before 1941 he published several collections of short stories and essays about the Civil War of 1918–20, collectivization in the left-bank regions of Moldavia, and new village life. His best postwar works were included in the collections On the Banks of the Dnestr (1946), Collected Short Stories (1948), and Short Stories (1951). Kanna creates vivid portraits of the village people. In the novella Mother (1947) and the novel Morning on the Dnestr (1951), Kanna depicts the hard lot of the peasants under the tsarist regime.

Kanna was a deputy to the second and third convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
