Iodic Acid, Hio3
Iodic Acid, Hio3
a strong inorganic acid. In the free state, iodic acid is a crystalline substance with a melting point of 110°C. It is highly soluble in water. Upon heating to 200°C it loses water and is converted into the anhydride I2O5. Iodic acid is obtained according to the reaction 3I2 + IOHNO3 = 6HIO3 + 10NO + 2H2O (at 70°−80oC). Its salts (iodates), which are strong oxidizing agents, decompose when heated to 400°C. Iodine is precipitated out during interaction with iodides in the presence of acids: KIO3 + 5KI + 3H2SO4 = 3I2 + 3K2SO4 + 3H20. Iodates are obtained upon interaction of iodine with hot caustic alkaline solutions or during the oxidation of iodides; iodates are used as chemical reagents.
