Iunker
(1) In the Russian Army of the 18th and first half of the 19th century, a noncommissioned officer and member of the nobility who had the right to a reduced (two years or less) term of service before being promoted to the lowest officer’s rank in cavalry, chasseur, and carabineer regiments (in infantry and grenadier regiments they served as subensigns). The iunkera received their training in special schools.
(2) After 1864, the term iunker was applied to cadets in military and special iunker schools in Russia.
