Iugra Peninsula

a peninsula in the extreme northeast of Europe, between the Barents and Kara seas, in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (formerly Nenets National Okrug), Arkhangel’sk Oblast, RSFSR.

The Iugra Peninsula occupies an area of 18,000 sq km. A rolling plain with a maximum elevation of 200 m covers most of the peninsula, which has extensive glacial deposits and, along the coast, marine deposits. The center of the peninsula is occupied by a ridge known as the Pai-Khoi, which has a maximum elevation of 467 m (Mount Moreiz).

Winter on the Iugra Peninsula lasts for seven months a year, and the summer is short and cool. The mean January temperature is –20°C, and the mean July temperature is 7°C. Annual precipitation totals approximately 300 mm. The largest river on the peninsula is the Bol’shaia Oiu. Moss, lichen, and polygonal tundras predominate. The port of Amderma is located on the peninsula.
