Ishimbai

Ishimbai

 

a city (a settlement until 1940) in the Bashkir ASSR. It is situated on both banks of the Belaia River, a tributary of the Kama. Its railroad station, Ishimbaevo, is located 166 km south of Ufa. Population, 55, 000 (1972). It is a major center for the oil industry. The Ishimbai oil fields, opened in 1932, were the first major fields in the Volga-Ural Oil and Gas Region. Industry includes an oil refinery, a plant manufacturing oil-drilling machinery, hosiery and underwear-knitting factories, and a heat and electric power plant. There is also a petroleumindustry technicum.
