Beatty, Bessie

Born Jan. 27, 1886, in Los Angeles; died Apr. 6, 1947, in New York. American writer. Born into a well-to-do family and graduated from college.

Bessie Beatty began her literary activity in 1904 as a journalist. As a war correspondent she spent eight months in Russia, where she witnessed the Great October Socialist Revolution, to which she devoted the book The Red Heart of Russia (1918). In 1918 and 1921, Beatty met with V. I. Lenin. With M. I. Kalinin, she took part in trips on an agitation ship and an agitation train. In her last years she was a radio commentator.
