Kagan Veniamin Fedorovich

Born Feb. 25 (Mar. 9), 1869, in Šiauliai, Lithuanian SSR; died May 8, 1953, in Moscow. Soviet mathematician.

Kagan graduated from the University of Kiev in 1892. In 1923 he became a professor at Moscow University. Beginning in the 1890’s he popularized the works of N. I. Lobachevskii. In Foundations of Geometry (vols. 1–2, 1905–07) he provided the axi-omatics of Euclidean space with a thorough analysis of the consistency and independence of the axioms. He created the theory of subprojective spaces, which are the broad generalization of Lobachevskian space. Kagan was the founder of the school of tensor differential geometry in the USSR. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1943.
