(yō`to͝onhāmən), mountain group, S central Norway; highest of Scandinavia. It culminates in Galdhøpiggen (8,098 ft/2,468 m high) and Glittertinden (8,104 ft/2,470 m). The Jostedalsbreen, a huge glacier, is to the west. Sparsely inhabited, the region is used for summer pasture. In Norse mythology, it was the home of the giants, the Jotun.

The highland has average elevations of 1,500–2.000 m, with a maximum of 2,469 m at Galdhøpiggen, the highest peak in the Scandinavian Mountains. It is composed of gabbros and diabases. The highland, dissected by deep valleys, has more than 300 cirque and cirque-valley glaciers and ice caps with a total area of 333.8 sq km. Annual precipitation is 1,300–2,000 mm. There are rivers with rapids. Vegetation features mountain tundra, and along the river valleys there are thickets of birch, European aspen, and mountain ash. The mountains are popular for hiking and winter sports.
