Kossovich, Kaetan Andreevich

 

Born in 1815 in Polotsk; died Jan. 26, 1883, in St. Petersburg. Russian Orientalist.

Kossovich taught Sanskrit, Avesta, and Old Persian at the University of St. Petersburg. He published the first Russian translations with commentaries of a number of works and excerpts from Sanskrit literature (including epic poems), a part of the first Sanskrit-Russian dictionary in Russia, translations of excerpts from Avesta, cuneiform writings by the Achaemenids, and works in the field of Hebraic studies and ancient Greek.
