highlands in the northern People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, part of the Manchurian-Korean mountains. Elevations of about 1,000 m predominate; the highest point is Puksubaek-san (2,522 m). The highlands are composed of granites, gneisses, and metamorphic rocks. The northern slopes are gentle and cut by tributaries of the Yalu River (Amnok-kang); the southern slopes are steep and faulted. There are mixed forests. Hydroelectric power plant reservoirs and cascades are located on the Changjin-gang and Hochon-gang. Deposits of gold and nonferrous metals are found in the highlands. There are pasture lands, and potatoes and oats are grown in river valleys.
