Kane Basin
Kane Basin,
110 mi (177 km) long, part of the channel between NW Greenland and E Ellesmere Island. The Humboldt Glacier flows into the basin. It is named for the U.S. explorer Elisha K. KaneKane, Elisha Kent,1820–57, American physician and arctic explorer, b. Philadelphia. Seeking adventure after medical school, Kane entered naval service and before he was 30 had seen many parts of the world and had served in the Mexican War.

Kane Basin
a sea of the Arctic Ocean, between the islands of Greenland and Ellesmere (Canadian Arctic Archipelago).
To the north, Kane Basin is connected to the Arctic Basin by the Kennedy and Robson channels; to the south it is connected to Baffin Bay by Smith Sound. The area of the sea is approximately 24,000 sq km, and its depth is 150–300 m. Kane Basin is covered with ice throughout the year. It was discovered by E. K. Kane and named in his honor.
