Kemerovo Hog

a general-purpose breed of hogs bred in the Kemerovo Oblast, RSFSR, by crossing indigenous late-maturing sows with boars of the Large White, Berkshire, Large Black, and other breeds. The resulting hybrids were separated and raised with strict selection procedures and improved feeding. The breed was registered in 1960.

Kemerovo sows and boars are large. They have massive bodies with a wide girth at the shoulders, a broad smooth back, and well-developed hams. The boars have a liveweight of 240–345 kg, and the sows 200–240 kg. The sows have ten to 12 pigs at one farrow. Kemerovo hogs are used for all types of fattening. During intensive meat fattening a pig at the age of six months reaches a weight of 100 kg, with a daily weight gain of 750–850 g. The carcass is 53 percent meat and 38 percent lard.

The Kemerovo breed has been divided into 12 strains of outstanding boars and 18 maternal families. Kemerovo hogs are raised in Western and Eastern Siberia, the Far East, and Northern Kazakhstan. The boars are used for commercial crossbreeding with several breeds, including the Large White and the Siberian Northern. The principal breeding farm is the Iurginskii farm in Kemerovo Oblast.
