Kašpárek

Kašpárek

 

a character in Czech puppet theater, the principal comic hero in folk puppet shows (usually a marionette). Until Kašpárek made his appearance around 1820 the character was called Pimperle (Petrushka). The character of Kašpárek is extremely popular in Czechoslovakia; he is a good-natured, cheerful Czech peasant, a joker and a jester. Kašpárek played an important role in political satire during Czechoslovakia’s struggle against Austrian dominion.
