Jostedalsbreen

(yô`stədälsbrā'ən), largest glacier of the European mainland, 315 sq mi (816 sq km), Sogn og Fjordane co., SW Norway. Located W of the Jotunheimen Mts., between Nordfjord and Sognafjord, the glacier is 60 mi (97 km) long and 15 mi (24 km) wide, with its head c.6,700 ft (2,040 m) above sea level. It has many tributary glaciers.

a glacial complex in Norway, on the Jostedalsbreen Plateau, between Nordfjorden and Sognafjorden. Ice formations include a glacial shield with an area of 238.4 sq km, situated at an elevation of 1,600–1,800 m. A total of 76 outlet glaciers with lengths to 15 km descend in the west to elevations of 100–300 m.
