Invergordon Revolt Of 1931

a revolt by sailors of Great Britain’s Atlantic Fleet at the harbor of Invergordon in Scotland. It began on the morning of Sept. 15, 1931, in response to the decision of the MacDonald government to lower the wages of the sailors. The rebelling sailors refused to put out to sea, removed their officers, and took control of the ships. After two days, on the evening of September 17, the government was forced to reverse itself on the matter of wages and make concessions to the sailors. The Invergordon revolt was one of the most determined actions by the popular masses of Great Britain against the reactionary policies of the government, which was trying to shift the burden of the economic crisis of 1929–33 onto their shoulders.
