Kachenovskii, Dmitrii Ivanovich
Born Dec. 8 (20), 1827, in Karachev in present-day Briansk Oblast; died Dec. 21, 1872 (Jan. 2, 1873), in Kharkov. Russian lawyer. Authority on international and state law, and on the history of political theories.
Kachenovskii was appointed a professor at the University of Kharkov in 1849. His work dealt primarily with international maritime law and the history of international law. He proposed the codification of international law by scholars from various countries and recommended the creation of an international organization for the elaboration and codification of international law.
Kachenovskii’s outlook was close to that of the Westernizers.His defense of bourgeois-liberal ideas is put forward in A Viewof the History of Political Science in Europe (1859) and On theContemporary State of Political Science in Western Europe and in Russia (1862).
