Kabwe (käb`wā), formerly Broken Hill, city (1990 pop. 166,519), central Zambia. During the 20th cent. it was an important lead and zinc mining and smelting center. As a result, the area suffers from significant lead pollution.Kabwe (until 1965, Broken Hill), a city in Zambia. Population, 67, 200 (including suburbs; 1969). It is connected by rail with the Republic of Zaïre and Rhodesia. Lead, zinc, and vanadium are mined and smelted in the area. The skull of a Palaeoanthropus, the Rhodesian man, was discovered here in a mine in 1921. |
