Joseph Stanley Mitchell

Born July 22, 1909, in Birmingham, England. English radiologist.

Mitchell graduated from the University of Birmingham and St. John’s College (Cambridge), and from a special medical school in Birmingham (1934). In 1943 he became director of the Radiotherapeutic Center of Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. From 1944 to 1945, Mitchell was in charge of medical investigations at the National Research Council Laboratory in Montreal. In 1946 he became professor of radiotherapeutics at the University of Cambridge, and in 1957 regius professor of physic at the same university. Mitchell has been a fellow of the Royal Society of London since 1952.

Mitchell’s principal works are devoted to clinical radiology and radiation therapy. He has studied the state of the cytoplasm and the metabolism of nucleic acids in patients during X-ray and gamma therapy. Mitchell has developed methods for the therapeutic use of various radioactive preparations. He was made an Honorary Doctor of Science of the University of Birmingham in 1958. Mitchell received the N. I. Pirogov Medal in 1967.
