Isaiia Kopinskii
Date of birth unknown; died 1640. Metropolitan of Kiev (1631–32); opponent of the Catholic and Uniate churches in the Ukraine; religious writer.
Isaiia Kopinskii was made bishop of Peremysl’ in 1620, and later of Lubny. In 1622 he sent a mission to the Russian government to discuss the transfer of a group of Ukrainian clergy and peasants into the territory of the Russian state. Isaiia supported the popular movement for the reunification of the Ukraine with Russia. Closely linked with the Zaporozhy’e Cossacks, he enlisted their aid in his struggle against pro-Polish factions within the clergy. He was one of the organizers of the Kievan brotherhood and its school.
