Joensuu

(yô`ĕnso͞o), city (1998 pop. 51,113), Eastern Finland prov., SE Finland. It is the trade center of the forest region of NE Karelia, has plywood mills, and is an important lake port. It was chartered in 1848 as a copper town. The modern city hall was designed by Eliel SaarinenSaarinen, Eliel
, 1873–1950, Finnish-American architect and city planner, resident of the United States after 1923. In Finland, Saarinen's most celebrated building was the railway station in Helsinki.

a city in eastern Finland, on Lake Pyhäselkä (in the Saimaa system of lakes). Population, 36, 600 (1970). Joensuu is the administrative center of the province of Pohjois-Karjala. The city is a commercial and transportation center and a timber-rafting lake port. Sawed lumber and plywood are produced in the city.
