Established: Designated on February 3, 1999. Center is owned and managed by the North Slope Borough on behalf of the whaling villages of the North Slope.
Location:In Barrow, a community of approximately 4000, which is located on the shore of the Arctic Ocean in northern Alaska.
Facilities:Exhibits, artifact collections, library, gift shop.
Special Features:Center is affiliated with New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park (see separate entry) in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to commemorate more than 2,000 whaling voyages from New Bedford to the western Arctic during the late 19th and early 20th century. Many Alaska Natives, particularly Inupiat Eskimo people, participated in commercial whaling. Center collects, preserves, and exhibits historical material, art objects, and scientific displays, and houses a traditional room where people can demonstrate and teach traditional crafts in elders-in-residence and artists-in residence programs.
