Keuper[′kȯip·ər] (geology) A European stage of geologic time, especially in Germany; Upper Triassic. Keuper name applied to a series of continental rock of variegated color from the Upper Triassic; it overlies the shell limestone from the middle division of the Triassic system. The name Keuper was introduced by the German geologist L. Buch in the 1820’s. Keuper deposits are represented by clay-marl series with intercalations of dolomites, gypsums, and anhydrites, as well as sandstones with plant remains (Neuropteris and Danacopsis). |
