On the northwestern border of IL; organized Feb 17, 1827 from Mercer, Henry, and Putnam counties. Name Origin: For Col. Joseph Hamilton Daviess (1774-1811), VA soldier and jurist who unsuccessfully attempted to indict Aaron Burr (1756-1836) for treason (1807). According to Jacob Piatt Dunn, "The Colonel's name was Daveiss and he always wrote it that way"; however, the name is sometimes spelled 'Daviess' in biographical entries and in places named for him
