Anoyi, and has little arable land. The chief products are olive oil, currants, and wine. The main town is Itháki (1991 pop. 1,714), located on the island's east coast. The island is traditionally celebrated as the home of OdysseusOdysseus , Lat. Ulysses , in Greek mythology, son and successor of King Laertes of Ithaca. Cyclopean walls and remains of a Corinthian colony (c.8th cent. B.C.) have been found. In 1953, Itháki was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami. Ithaki(Ithaca), one of the Greek Ionian Islands, located near the west coast of the Balkan Peninsula. Area, approximately 90 sq km; maximum elevation, 804 m. In the ancient Greek epics, Ithaki was the home and kingdom of Odysseus. However, identification of Homer’s Ithaki with the actual island is debatable. |
