Bacteriopurpurin
Bacteriopurpurin
a set of pigments produced by purple bacteria; it consists of bacteriochlorophylls and yellow and red noncyclic carotenoids. Since carotenoids generally mask green pigments, purple bacteria are stained various shades of red. Carotenoids transmit light energy to the bacteriochlorophylls, which are responsible for the capacity of purple bacteria for photosynthesis.
