Kamensk-Shakhtinskii

 

a city in Rostov Oblast, RSFSR. Landing on the Severskii Donets River. Railroad station (Kamenskaia) on the Millerovo-Rostov-on-Don line. Population, 71,000 (1972; 43, 000 in 1939).

Kamensk-Shakhtinskii has combines for the production of synthetic fibers and building materials and a meat-packing plant. Other industrial enterprises include a machine-building plant (mining equipment), a plant for the manufacture of glass vessels, a brickyard, and a food-products plant. The Kamenskaia Heat and Power Plant is located in the city. Kamensk-Shakhtinskii also has an evening chemical and mechanical technicum and a pedagogical school. The city arose in 1686 as a cossack settlement. It became the cossack stanitsa (large village) of Kamenskaia in 1817 and the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinskii in 1927.
