intracath

Intracath

 [in´trah-kath″] trademark for a type of intravenous cannulation device in which a rigid needle is surrounded by a plastic catheter and they are inserted as a unit; when the vein is successfully entered the rigid needle is removed and the catheter is advanced into the vein.

intracath

(ĭn′tră-kăth) A device for facilitating the introduction of an intravenous catheter. An inflexible needle is surrounded by a catheter. They are inserted into the vein as a unit; then the needle is removed. This allows the catheter to be inserted further in the vein. The traditional intracath has been replaced by the angiocath or central venous line.
