Kama Truck Plant
(KamAZ), a major enterprise of the Soviet automotive industry; a complex of plants to produce trucks that is under construction in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatar ASSR. Construction began in 1970. The plant is intended to produce 150, 000 vehicles and 250, 000 engines per year. There are plans to produce 13 models of trucks and three models of diesel engines. The complex will include foundry, forging, frame-stamping, diesel, truck, and repairtool plants, as well as the production of special and multihead machine tools and automatic lines for the plant’s requirements. Along with the Volga Automobile Works, KamAZ will occupy a leading place in the Soviet automotive industry in terms of the level of technology, engineering, mechanization, and automation. An automated production control system will be introduced. Engineering and laboratory centers are being organized to conduct various types of research, they will be equipped with the most modern facilities. The first stage of the plant will be put into operation in 1976. In addition to the plants of the complex, a new city is being built for more than 300, 000 inhabitants.
