Kama Pulp and Paper Combine

 

a major enterprise of the Soviet pulp and paper industry; produces sulfite pulp, school notebooks, feed yeasts, ethyl alcohol, and book, offset, and writing paper. It is located in the city of Krasnokamsk, Perm’ Oblast. It began operation in 1936 and has undergone reconstruction and expansion. The raw materials for the combine come from the Kama River basin. During the log-rafting season, the combine receives up to 1. 5 million cu m of fir and spruce wood. The pulp plant that is part of the combine is equipped with large boilers for cooking the pulp, as well as with modern bleaching units. The wood-pulp mill produces white wood pulp. The paper mills of the combine have eight high-speed paper machines operating at speeds up to 450 m/min, with a trimmed paper width of 4. 2 m. In 1970 the combine produced 274, 000 tons of paper, exceeding its output in 1940 by a factor of more than 3.
