a semirigid dirigible built in 1927 in Italy. It had a volume of 18, 500 m3, a cruising speed of 90 km/hr, a range of 5, 500 km, and a payload of 9.5 tons. Power was provided by three motors of 185 kW each (250 horsepower each). In 1928 a 16-man Italian expedition on the Italia, under the command of U. Nobile, made a flight from the Spitsbergen archipelago to the North Pole, but on the return flight it crashed north of Spitsbergen. Of the eight survivors, seven were rescued by the Soviet expedition on the icebreaker Krasin and one, by the Swedish pilot Lundborg.
