Izvestiia Vsesoiuznogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva

(Proceedings of the All-Union Geographic Society), the oldest Russian scientific geographic journal; the principal periodical of the Geographic Society of the USSR.

Izvestiia was founded in 1848 under the name Geograficheskie izvestiia (Geographic News) as a supplement to the journal Zapiski (Notes; 1846), which was published by the Russian Geographic Society. Three volumes were issued up to 1850. In 1851 Geograficheskie izvestiia was renamed Vestnik Geografiches-kogo obshchestva (Herald of the Geographic Society), which was published six times a year until 1860. In 1861 Vestnik was merged with Zapiski into one publication— Zapiski Russkogo geograficheskogo obshchestva (Notes of the Russian Geographic Society); the new journal was published four times a year. In 1865 it became the independent journal Izvestiia Russkogo geograficheskogo obshchestva (Proceedings of the Russian Geographic Society), which was published as Izvestiia Gosudarstvennogo geograficheskogo obshchestva (Proceedings of the State Geographic Society) from 1925 and received the name Izvestiia Vsesoiuznogo geograficheskogo obshchestva in 1940.

The journal deals with questions of the theory and methodology of geography and with sciences related to geography. It also prints regional essays on the physical and economic geography of the USSR and foreign countries and materials on the activity of the Geographic Society of the USSR. A considerable amount of space is devoted to geographic bibliography. The journal is published six times a year. Circulation ranges from 1,800 to 3,300 in various years.
