Iziaslav Iaroslavich

Iziaslav Iaroslavich

Born 1024; died Oct. 3, 1078. Prince of Turov and grand prince of Kiev from 1054.

Iziaslav Iaroslavich was the oldest son of Iaroslav the Wise and one of the three compilers of the Pravda Iaroslavichei (law code of Iaroslav’s sons). He was overthrown in 1068 as a result of a popular uprising in Kiev and fled to Poland. In 1069 he seized Kiev with Polish assistance, but in 1073 he was again banished by his brothers. He repeatedly appealed for help to the German emperor, the Polish king, and the pope, finally regaining the Kievan throne in 1077. Soon thereafter he was killed in an internecine struggle, fighting against princes Oleg Sviatoslavich and Boris Viacheslavich.
