Japan TrenchJapan Trencha submarine depression in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, along the eastern edge of Honshu. The Japan Trench is about 1,000 km long and reaches a maximum depth of 8,412 m. Its cross section is V-shaped: the width of the trench within the isobath ranges from 7 km to about 60 km, while on the bottom it ranges from 1.8 to 36 km. There are numerous earthquake epicenters confined to the sides and bottom of the trench. |
