Szentágothai, János
Born Oct. 31, 1912, in Budapest. Hungarian anatomist and physiologist; founder of the school of functional neurohistology. Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1967; corresponding member from 1948; president from 1977).
Szentágothai began teaching in the University of Budapest’s medical school in 1936, becoming professor of anatomy in 1963. He is director of the Institute of Anatomy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Szentágothai’s main works have dealt with the structure of nerve centers and mechanisms of neurohumoral regulation of brain function. Szentágothai is a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (1972), the Leopoldina German Academy of Naturalists, and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).
