Kalmarsund

a sound in the Baltic Sea between Oland Island and the southeast coast of Scandinavia. Length, 130 km; width, 6 to 24 km. The currents, driven by the wind, can attain speeds of 3–4 km/hr. Kalmarsund freezes in severe winters.
