Japanese Varnish Tree
Japanese Varnish Tree (Rhus verniciflua), also known as Japanese sumac and Japanese lacquer tree, a tree measuring up to 20 m tall of the family Anacardiaceae. The leaves are oddly pinnate. The flowers, which are small and yellowish white, are in panicles. The fruit is a yellow-green drupe. The Japanese varnish tree grows in Japan and China, where it is of great economic significance. When the bark is cut, a poisonous, viscous, lacquer-bearing resin is exuded, which burns the skin. Japan varnish is manufactured from the resin. The fruits contain approximately 25 percent fat, from which Japan wax is obtained. The Japanese varnish tree yields a valuable rot-resistant lemon-yellow wood with a beautiful grain.
