Jules Marouzeau

Born Mar. 20, 1878, in Fleurat, department of Creuse; died Sept. 27, 1964, in Itieux, department of Vienne. French linguist. Director of the Practical School of Higher Learning (from 1920); professor at the Sorbonne (1925–51).

Marouzeau concerned himself chiefly with classical languages; he organized the publication of an international bibliography of classical philology (L’Annee philologique, from 1928). He also founded the Society for Latin Studies and the journal Revue des etudes latines (1923). Marouzeau wrote numerous works on stylistics and Latin and compiled the Dictionary of Linguistic Terms (1933; Russian translation, 1960).
